Selection process
SBI PO is a three-phase process: a qualifying Prelims, a Mains with an objective section plus a descriptive letter-and-essay paper, and Phase III — a psychometric test, group exercise and interview. It is widely considered one of the toughest banking exams.
SBI Clerk is a two-stage online exam — a qualifying Prelims and a merit-deciding Mains — with no interview. A local-language test applies to candidates who did not study the state's official language.
Exam pattern compared
Both Prelims have 100 questions in 60 minutes (English, a quant section and Reasoning), each section separately timed at 20 minutes. The difference shows in the Mains:
- SBI PO Mains: Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, Data Analysis & Interpretation, General/Economy/Banking Awareness and English — 155 objective questions for 200 marks — plus a 30-minute descriptive paper for 50 marks.
- SBI Clerk Mains: General/Financial Awareness, General English, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning & Computer Aptitude — 190 questions for 200 marks in 160 minutes.
SBI's Data Interpretation and high-level reasoning are known to be harder than most other bank exams, so build real depth there.
Salary and growth
An SBI PO joins as an officer with a higher pay scale, faster promotions and a clear path toward middle and senior management. An SBI Clerk starts in the clerical cadre with a lower but stable salary and promotion opportunities over time, including to the officer cadre through internal exams.
Difficulty and competition
SBI PO is harder and more competitive — a descriptive paper, group exercise and interview, plus tougher objective questions. SBI Clerk is more approachable with no interview and slightly easier questions, but cut-offs are high, so speed and accuracy are decisive.
Which should you choose?
- Choose SBI PO for an officer role, higher pay and faster growth, if you're ready for a longer, tougher process.
- Choose SBI Clerk for a quicker entry into SBI with no interview, or as a reliable selection while you continue preparing for officer posts.
Because the Prelims syllabus overlaps heavily, preparing for both — and also for IBPS PO and Clerk — multiplies your chances in a single season.
